- I always wanted to be an astronomer, and studied astronomy at DeAnza College and Chabot College. - I changed to computers because it was challenging and well-paying. While working full-time, I completed my Bachelors degree in Math/Comp Sci at Santa Clara University in 1987. - After working as a Software Systems Engineer at ESL, TRW, and Lockheed on Defense projects, I went back to school for a Masters degree in Education for teaching Mathematics from the University of Phoenix in 2013.
Experience
- I was a software systems engineer for over 20 years, working on Defense projects that apply math to real world problems. When I was ready for a change, I decided I wanted more young people, especially girls, to get into math and engineering. - I started tutoring math and reading at the Elementary level for 5 years in San Jose. I then moved to substitute teaching elementary, middle, and high school, primarily math. I went back to school to get my teaching credential for teaching math through calculus, and then taught middle school math. - I have experience teaching Common Core and helping students see why they are learning math by showing them what it is good for in their lives. Most kids do better if they can see the relevance of a concept. I also use my quirky sense of humor to make math more fun.

Hobbies
- I love quilting for the blend of art and math. My personal quilting motto is "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!" I can't seem to follow other people's patterns without changing them to make them my own. I teach quilting and design patterns, believing that anyone can express their creative side through quilting. - I have just moved to Sequim, and am looking forward to putting in raised beds for gardening vegetables, growing flowers and herbs, and harvesting fruit. I plan to also have chickens. This is an exciting change for a city girl! - I love to read. Growing up with very little money, reading took me to many places, planets, and even universes. It helped foster the idea that anything is possible!
